Painting is one of the oldest forms of art dating back to prehistoric cave paintings created over 31,000 years ago. Up until the 18th century paintings did not exceed tapestry works despite many fantastic paintings dating back to the renaissance or earlier. From 1970’s and through the 1990’s painting lost its popularity however claimed it back in the millennium. Since then the practice has remained very much unchanged.
Paintings consist of a range of coloured pigments and binder. It is common for a painting to comprise of imagery inspired by objects or events in the artist’s daily lives.
Paintings are one of the most saleable items available at auction with some bringing in staggering amounts of money. The most expensive painting to have ever been sold was the “Nafea faa ipoipo” by Paul Gauguin 1892. During a private sale 2015 a buyer paid £300 million for it.
