Meissen porcelain was founded in 1708. They were the first European hard paste porcelain company to produce porcelain in large quantities.
Meissen porcelain is manufactured by mixing feldspar, kaolin, quartz and other raw materials together. Hard paste porcelain requires a higher firing temperature than soft based porcelain to give it a translucent and white ceramic finish. Hard paste is much less likely to crack when exposed to hot liquids.
The Meissen signature logo consists of crossed swords. This was introduced in 1720 making it one of the oldest trademarks in existence.
Meissen was a rare and expensive product that was sought out after by the upper classes. The company often had orders from wealthy families in Russia, England and France. Many of the collections sold to these families can now be found in some of the world’s greatest museums.
